Companies and sites like Spotify have influence change in terms of how music is consumed. Wloemert and Papies conducted research to determine whether or not the effect streaming is having on the music industry’s revenue has been good or bad. At first they believed that streaming services who used the paid subscription model were having a positive effect on revenue, but those who used the freemium model, who made their money from advertising were definitely having a negative effect on industry revenue, so they thought. In the end research showed that the positive effects of companies like Spotify actually offset the effects of companies that used the freemium based subscription model, and that the overall effects of streaming continue to be positive (Wloemert, Papies, 2016).
